It doesn’t matter whether you’re moving near or far—it’s important to stay organized during your move. And that doesn’t just mean making a schedule and sticking to it. You’ll need to figure out a system for organizing, packing and storing your belongings. Moving is one of the most daunting tasks you'll ever have to do, but you can make it easier with these six best ways.
1. Divide and Conquer.
Go through every room of your house and decide what you’d like to keep and what you can get rid of. It’s likely you have a lot stuffed away in the room, closets or drawers that you no longer need. There’s no sense in moving things you no longer want, so take time upfront to decide what you want to keep, what you want to sell, what you want to put in long-term storage and what you want to toss. Keep the piles separate to avoid confusion, and pack only what you intend to keep.
2. Hold a Moving Sale.
Before moving, if you’ve got time, get everything organized for a moving sale. Select a date and a location (probably your front yard or garage). Then, begin preparing items for sale by putting price tags on them. Advertise online or in your local newspaper, and put up signs in the neighborhood. Do keep in mind that selling some of your no longer wanted or needed belongings, either online or at a moving sale, will bring fresh funds for your house moving project.
3. Purchase a Moving Kit
Depending on the number of rooms in your house, and especially the amount of household items in each of them. You won’t just need moving boxes – you’re going to need a lot of packing boxes to keep your belongings safe during the house move. If you really want to know how to keep moving costs low, look around for buckets, baskets, trash cans, suitcases (ideal for books), bags, or even trash bags (good for transporting clothes on their hangers). In addition to moving boxes, packing paper, bubble wrap and moving blankets can also cost you more than you want. So, to lower your moving expenses even more, you can be substituted with super cheap newsprint, regular blankets, towels, socks, bed sheets, or any other pieces of clothing you can spare.
4. Schedule a Packing Party.
Packing your things can be overwhelming, especially if you have a large family or a ton of belongings, so don’t go it alone. Solicit the assistance of family and friends, but sweeten the deal by emphasizing there will be food and drinks for helpers (just don’t offer too much booze until the move is complete). Treat them right and they’ll be more than willing to lend a helping hand the next time around.
5. Label Boxes Thoroughly.
Give helpers complete instructions for how to label boxes—this will keep everyone on track and allow for a smooth moving day. It’s a good idea to put labels so you can identify which box goes to what room. You can color-code them to know immediately the contents of the box. This will make unpacking easier and more convenient. Furthermore, remember to put FRAGILE on breakable pieces including mirrors, drinking glass, plates, and others so that movers will handle them with extra care.
6. Schedule your Move.
The moment you have decided which removal company to hire is the moment you should reserve your move date. If you have the freedom of choice, then select a date during the off-peak season to avoid the crowd and cut the costs when moving though a healthy price discount.
